The Offense of the Cross

Christians have always argued about the best approach to evangelism. Should it be “fire and brimstone”, where we instill the fear of hell into people and scare them into heaven? Or perhaps the other extreme, where we pat the lost on the head and say “There, there, Jesus will make it better. He wants to be your friend.” Another option is “Pascal’s Wager”, where we basically ask the lost to “make a safe bet” on Jesus, that they have nothing to lose by accepting him. But what does the Bible tell us?

Acts 18:16-32 (TNIV)
While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. …

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. …

“Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone– an image made by human design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.” When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.”

1 Corinthians 1:17-25 (TNIV)
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel– not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

Where are the wise? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

Notice that when addressing the Greek philosophers, Paul never used fear or intimidation, but calm reason. He simply told them that Jesus was God, who proved himself divine by rising from the dead. It is this “message of the cross” that we must preach, not either fear of hell (even though it is a reality) or a life of peace in this age (even though true believers can have it). Paul did not attempt to make friends first, but instead went straight to the resurrection. Neither did he try to extract a confession of sin out of anyone, or fan the flames of hell before them. We waste a lot of time when we fail to follow his example.

Instead, let us simply tell people that Jesus is God reconciling the whole world to himself by becoming one of us, sacrificing his physical life for sins, and rising physically from the dead in an immortal body. We must be prepared to present evidence for this, with answers to common objections to the resurrection. Questions may follow, such as why Jesus had to die, why we needed to be reconciled to God, etc., and we must have ready answers. But the gospel itself is all about Jesus rising from the dead.

We’re just presenting a claim, backed up by historical evidence, perhaps adding our own testimony as further proof of the miraculous transformation that turns a believer into “a new creation”. A true “conversion” is when these facts are presented and the person accepts them as true, being personally convinced beyond any doubt. This is very important; we need to make sure the person is not just saying what we want to hear, or making a hasty judgment only later to think of more questions and begin to doubt.

Think about it: How likely is it that after a person is given the facts about the resurrection and accepts them, that this is a false conversion? How likely would that person be to have doubts later, since they can always re-examine the facts? Those facts will never change, and they don’t depend upon our good deeds or emotions. We should never tell people to look at us or at any mere human leaders for proof of how well Christianity “works”, knowing that we’re all human and subject to falling. Instead we should always point to Jesus, who will never let anyone down.

This is not to say that emotions must not be involved, or that the great love of God for all mankind can be tossed aside. But we need to reset our focus as a church and “sound a clear signal” (1 Cor. 14:7-9). The gospel accounts are for the very purpose of giving evidence of Jesus’ divinity, sacrifice, and resurrection. Growth and maturity are what the rest of the New Testament is about, and they are very important, but people must be born before they can grow.

Big Bang, Big Problems

The Big Bang theory (BB) is more than just the theory that the universe exploded from a single point of matter (”singularity”). It involves more than three dimensions and assumes that the universe has no center or edge. But we need to ask some questions before swallowing this theory, no matter how many people say it’s scientific fact, or how long they’ve repeated it.

First of all, the famous astronomer Hubble didn’t like what his telescopes were telling him: that the red shift phenomenon was uniform in every direction. It meant that we here on earth might be in the center of the universe. Why was this a problem? It had nothing to do with science and everything to do with the bias of naturalism and that the Bible’s account of creation just could not be tolerated, even if the facts seemed to support it. An alternative theory had to be devised, Occam’s Razor be hanged!*

The reason this posed a problem for Hubble is that if the red shift meant galaxies were moving away from us, and if the earth is not near the center of the universe, then we should expect to also see many galaxies with a blue shift, meaning they are coming towards earth. Yet no such blue-shifted galaxies are observed. So the Doppler effect had to be abandoned and a more complex model devised.

After a while it was decided, strictly on the basis of assertion and not any observational backing, that time and space must also be expanding along with matter. But this poses two immediate problems: no one has been able to account for the loss of the incredible amount of energy needed to drive this expansion, and any kind of measurement is rendered impossible since the measuring devices are also expanding. This makes the theory unfalsifiable.

Granted this is an oversimplification, but the fact remains that BB suffers from some serious flaws. And there is a growing list of scientists (the vast majority of which are atheists) who have rejected BB for having far too many unprovable and unobservable dependencies.

And, with any such theory of origins, we must ask: where did the “singularity” come from? It cannot be infinitely old or massive or self-energizing, or we would not still be observing expansion or increasing entropy. By its very nature, it had to have a beginning. How did it come into existence? And what caused it to explode? And how does any kind of explosion result in increased order and complexity? And after the unimaginable amounts of time it had to take for the farthest galaxies to get where they are, why are they still in coherent galaxies and not expanded into featureless clouds of matter?

Not even the renowned Steven Hawking has been able to account for these things. It’s all conjecture and imagination, and he has said as much in his book, “A Brief History of Time”. Yet he, Hubble, and many others have been committed above all else to their religion of naturalism. Scientific observation must take a back seat to idealistic assertions. The BB is hopelessly flawed, undone by science and observation, but the faithful will not leave the sacred ground they’ve built their reputations upon. At least we can admire their religious devotion and faithfulness.

*Occam’s Razor refers to the principle of looking always for the simplest explanation for something.

If The Shoe Fits

A recent news article reported that a man set fire to himself, a Christmas tree, and the revolutionary and American flags, while holding a sign that cursed “the religious establishment” and the local school system. He did this in protest of the school board’s decision to rename “winter” and “spring” breaks back to the original “Christmas” and “Easter” breaks.

Now we all know what the reaction of humanists/atheists would be had the man been a Christian who was protesting the opposite. They’d use it to condemn all religion and all believers as nut cases, and again launch into a “blame all evil on religion” rant.

But when the shoe’s on the other foot, what will happen? After all, it’s embarrassing for the anti-theistic religion crowd when one of their own does something “religious” like this.

Undoubtedly they will protest, “You can’t blame us all for one crackpot, who got that way because of religious oppression.” Yet these same people wouldn’t hesitate to blame all Christians for the actions of a few. Theistic religion would still get the blame, no matter who does something stupid to demonstrate religious fervor on an issue.

And there is no other explanation for anyone snapping over something like this, than a religious devotion to atheism. We have every right to blame the religion of atheism/humanism for this incident. Religion is religion, no matter what the specific beliefs are. “There is no God” is the same as “There is a God”. Both are assertions of an unprovable philosophy; both are defended with irrational devotion; both aggressively seek converts; both have lobbyists working for legal sanction of their views.

The U.S. Supreme Court in Torcaso vs Watkins, 81 S.Ct. 1681 (1961) contains the following statement:

“Among religions in this country which do not teach what would generally be considered a belief in the existence of God, are Buddhism, Taoism, Ethical Culture, Secular Humanism”

Here are some quotes from The Safety Net Plan, Chapter 1— The Problem of Humanistic Education, p. 5-6, from Christian Liberty Academy:

Most dictionaries define humanism as a cult which substitutes faith in man for faith in God. It is this faith that the government schools are promoting.

John Dewey, the “father” of progressive education, signed the Humanist Manifesto, as did C. F. Potter, author of Humanism; A New Religion. In that book he writes: “Education is a most powerful ally of humanism, and every American public school is a school of humanism. What can the theistic Sunday schools, meeting for an hour once a week, and teaching only a fraction of the children, do to stem the tide of a five-day program of humanistic teaching?”

Leading secular humanist Paul Blanchard, writing in The Humanist, pronounced: “I think the most important factor leading us to a secular society has been the educational factor. Our schools may not teach Johnny to read properly, but the fact that Johnny is in school until he is 16 tends to lead toward the elimination of religious superstition. The average child now acquires a high school education, and this militates against Adam and Eve and all other myths of alleged history.”

Notice what those men said. Their attitude toward education was not as much about equipping children to face the world as it was about eliminating religion, especially Christianity, from American minds.

Humanism cannot be separated from atheism. Humanism is simply the natural result of atheism, what atheism is in practice. And these cannot be separated from naturalism, which asserts that there cannot be anything beyond nature, so all evidence must be interpreted with that bias. It pretends to be without bias, but this is simply not true.

Again, to assert one’s view is to make a philosophical/religious pronouncement, whether stated in the positive or the negative. And as assertions, both are under the burden of proof. Atheists cannot absolve themselves of having to prove what they assert.

Start Me Up!

I’ve written much about salvation itself, but the most vexing problem believers seem to face is what happens after that. We get saved, the glow wears off, and then we start to worry. Why do I not have the fire anymore? Why is my Christian life a drudgery? Why am I on a plateau, not backsliding but not growing either? I go to revivals and concerts and get all pumped up, but then it’s back to the rat race. What went wrong?

It’s because somewhere along the line, we turn inwards and backwards. Remember the account of Peter walking on the water toward Jesus? As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, Peter could walk on water. But then he turned away to look at the storm, and then his own predicament. Jesus saved him from drowning, but Peter learned an important lesson.

In the same way, we start to think that it’s the rituals, the habits, the things we do that keep the fire going. But that’s backwards.

Christian discipleship is like your favorite flavor of ice cream. It should be something you crave, something that requires discipline and restraint NOT to over-indulge in, something you’d give up food, sleep, everything for, if you could. You want to spend every free moment gobbling up the Word and the Relationship.

Why don’t we have that hunger, that drive? We don’t ask. And we don’t ask because we don’t trust. We are afraid of what God may have planned for us, and it might require something unpleasant or risky. We see the trials and suffering of the prophets and apostles in the Bible, and we don’t want to go there ourselves.

It’s a frightening thing to say to God, “I’m all yours. Do with me as you will.” But that’s what trust is, what faith is, what it really means to make Jesus your Lord and not just your Savior. It’s the difference between spiritual infancy and growing to maturity, both mentally and spiritually. Why do we find it so easy to trust Jesus with the fate of our souls, but find it so difficult to trust that same Jesus to make us like Him?

So you don’t need to get up an hour earlier, or buy a bigger daily devotional guide, or sign up for yet another small group. You need to drop all that and sit down with Jesus one-on-one, and you need to be honest. Tell him you give up trying to make your own fire. Tell him you trust him completely, no matter what. And then rest in the assurance that he will provide the power to be who he designed you to be. Take your hands off the wheel… and buckle your seatbelt.

Christmas

Ever ask yourself: Why is December 25th a national holiday, and no other day in December? Why is it a “season of peace and goodwill”? Why do people buy each other gifts to exchange on that day?

Secular though it may be, and pagan in origin as many of its elements are, the “problem” is that Word— Christ. Anything but that, in today’s PC world. They hate Him so much they want his Name stricken from every facet of public life. They want history revised to ignore the most influential Individual who ever walked the earth. They want a sterile, Jesus-free zone. They don’t want Immanuel (”God with us”), they want him out of their faces.

Now it’s true that the likelihood of Jesus having been born on that actual day is pretty well zero, but that’s beside the point. The Bible never tells us to celebrate Jesus’ birthday, but that’s beside the point too. The point is that Jesus is Public Enemy Number One in the world, and they hate Him and any nation that still dares to breathe his Name. So they scream and stomp their feet and plug their ears and destroy all they can, because they are spoiled little brats that must have their own way. Tolerance is out the window when it comes to Jesus.

But He’s not going away! He’ll give those people enough rope to hang themselves. They will appear to succeed for a time, but the party will be short-lived. Soon the Name of Jesus will be revered again, and the PC Police will be jailed. And that time is approaching fast. So take heart Christians, our Day will come.

prophecy fulfilling south america kingdom

I saw ths article at Fox News; take a moment to read it. So far, we have W. Europe, N. America, and now S. America, 3 out of 10 as outlined in Kah’s book “En Route to Global Occupation“:

  1. N. America
  2. W. Europe
  3. Japan
  4. Australia and S. Africa
  5. Russia / Asia
  6. C. & S. America
  7. N. Africa / Middle East
  8. C. Africa
  9. Indonesia
  10. China

Obviously if Japan and China work alone, there’s not much to wait for regarding those kingdoms. The Russia/Asia alliance is already a practical reality, if not a formal one. It isn’t covered in the mainstream media, but there is a very strong Islamic presence and sympathy there. So really the last one I expect to see forming is the N. Africa/Middle East, since they are in so much disarray all the time.

Practically speaking then, there’s really only about 3 kingdoms left to form.
