Part 1: How NOT To Teach Sunday School
Why we need not a revival or reformation, but a revolution
Conventional Wisdom
The average Christian, when presented with such ideas, simply brushes them off with "Sorry, but I'm not changing, and besides, all those great teachers can't be wrong". Don't be so sure. Popularity is a poor substitute for discernment. And you must know that Satan is well aware of our weakness for charismatic leaders and ThD credentials. Don't get me wrong, education is a good thing, but we must never let down our guard. The Bible tells us that even the apostle Paul was not above scrutiny, even by the common people, who checked his teachings against the scriptures (Acts 17:11).
The reason we are so easily led astray is because we have no compass; we don't read the Bible beyond a few short devotional references, or we just want to see how fast we can say we read through the whole thing. "Hiding God's Word in our heart" means more than memorization, it means meditation, and I don't mean it the way the world does. The world teaches that meditation means emptying your mind and just listening to whatever pops in to fill the void. This is a very dangerous trend in the churches today, and it slithers in under such guises as breath prayer, the Labyrinth, and a host of other New Age occult techniques. Instead, we are to fill our minds with God's words. Take even a few minutes to look over parts of the 119th Psalm and you will see the kind of meditation God wants from us.
So let's go beyond cheerleading for our favorite personalities and put them under the spotlight of the Word. Don't listen to those who would admonish you to "never touch God's anointed", which they twist to mean you can never question a Christian leader. This expression comes from the time David was running from Saul and would not personally attack him because he was still the anointed King of Israel. Saul was bad, and David would be the rightful king, but David knew that even he had to wait for God's timing. But to apply this to the point where we must swallow without question anything coming from the mouth of a church leader is absurd and sinful. It is irresponsible at the very least to put mere mortals above the Word of God.
